Position opening at FFA BUT: Postdoctoral Research Fellow, app. deadline 1 Sep 2026

The Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) of Brno University of Technology (BUT) is pleased to announce a call for applications for its postdoc programme, open to international early-career researchers in art history and theory, aesthetics, visual studies, media theory, curatorial studies, and artistic research. The aim of the programme is to support recent PhD graduates in their transition to professional academic careers while contributing to the development of research and innovation at the faculty. The programme offers short-term R2 employment positions through annually announced calls.

The current call invites applications for one full-time position, with an anticipated start date of 1 January 2027, ending on 31 December 2027 (or by agreement).

Who Can Apply

Applicants must have completed their doctoral studies no more than eight years (“maximum period”) prior to the date of application, preferably at an academic institution outside Czechia, or at a Czech university, provided that they were affiliated to a research and/or academic institution abroad for at least one year.

The maximum period may be extended to account for maternity or parental leave, long-term illness exceeding 90 days, or care for a person deemed dependent on assistance under the Czech Social Services Act.

Job Description and Expectations

  • Publication of at least one article in a top-quartile (Q1 or Q2) journal indexed in the Web of Science with clear affiliation to FFA BUT.
  • Involvement in academic activities within the doctoral study programme (e.g. one lecture, seminar, or thesis consultation per semester).
  • A public presentation communicating the research to the wider public.

Application Requirements

  1. A research proposal (max. 3 pages), written clearly and concisely, including:
    • Project title,
    • Research focus, including research questions and methods,
    • Motivation for conducting the research at FFA BUT,
    • Project timeline,
    • Specification of spatial, material, or other required resources.
  2. A structured CV (including a list of publications) with current contact details (address, phone number, email).
  3. A list of authored academic publications or a portfolio of research projects related to the proposal.
  4. Copies (scans) of documents attesting to institutional affiliations and academic degrees earned.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Originality and research potential of the proposed project.
  • Relevance of the project aims and outputs to the faculty’s research activities.
  • Feasibility of the project within a one-year timeframe.

We Offer

  • A supportive and stimulating environment at an art faculty, supported by the stable infrastructure of a prestigious university recognised with the HR Excellence in Research Award.
  • Opportunities for further research and academic development, with openness to diverse pedagogical, research, and creative approaches.
  • Access to the faculty’s research and production facilities (see the organigram and the organizational structure).
  • Guidance and support in the preparation of a follow-up project at FFA BUT.
  • Full-time employment (1.0 FTE) with remuneration in accordance with BUT’s Remuneration Regulations (approx. CZK 65,000 gross salary). The agreed amount takes into account all the expenditures incurred in connection with the position.
  • A fixed-term contract (1 year), expected to begin in January 2027.
  • The possibility of obtaining financial support for research and other creative activities, mobilities, as well as motivational rewards.
  • Flexible working hours, work-life balance, educational courses, a discounted mobile tariff, and a meal allowance.
  • Employee benefits, see www.favu.vut.cz/en/job-vacancies/why-work-at-ffa.

Selection Procedure

The selection process will consist of two rounds. The first round involves internal evaluation of submitted applications. Applications will be assessed based on the originality and potential of the proposed project, its relevance to FFA’s research and teaching focus, and the feasibility of its implementation within the proposed timeline. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a second round in the form of an online interview.

Results will be announced by 30 September 2026.
