Madina Tlostanova – The decolonial turn in art: pro et contra

lecture and discussion for the public
22 October 2025, 18:30
Galerie TIC/Kino CIT, Radnická 4, Brno

In the last decade decolonial thought has left the niche academic environments and social movements of the global South to come into the centre of not just social, political and cultural public debates but also into the core practices, institutions and discussions on contemporary art, fiction, cinema and theatre. The decolonial turn in art is closely related to decolonization of knowledge, sensing, memory, imagination. Various local contexts and histories, imperial-colonial, inter-imperial and ideological entanglements generate different aesthetic tools and frames in mastering and embodying decolonial impulses and agendas. The lecture will focus on the main elements of the decolonial aesthesis and aesthetics in contemporary art.

Madina Tlostanova is a feminist thinker and fiction writer, professor of gender studies at Linköping University, Sweden. She focuses on the aesthetic and epistemic aspects of decoloniality; the postsocialist human condition, fiction and art; critical future studies. Her most recent book is Narratives of Unsettlement. Being Out-of-joint as a Generative Human Condition (Routledge, 2023). Currently she is working on a monograph on the stateless future.

The lecture is organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts BUT in cooperation with TIC Gallery.
Lecture will be held in English.
