This lecture reflects on the creation of a living archive through the collective restoration of the Hotel Gondolin, a long-standing self-managed housing project for the travesty/trans community in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Based on my direct involvement in the renovation process between 2022 and 2023, the talk explores how architecture can serve not only as a material intervention but also as a site of memory, care, and resistance.
Drawing from filmed interviews with residents and protagonists, over 1,500 photographs, and hours of audiovisual documentation, the author examine how trans spatial practices have created a form of vital infrastructure that enables survival, existence, and the everyday projection of a livable future. The presentation also addresses the methodological and political challenges of documenting these spaces from within a militant architectural practice and considers how working with fragmentary, affective, and situated forms of knowledge can challenge disciplinary norms and shape alternative forms of archiving, opening new ways of thinking about spatial justice.
Facundo Revuelta is an architect specializing in public policy and gender and queer studies. His work, research, and activism focus on developing projects in the field of queer and trans housing and community-sharing initiatives. From 2022 to 2023, he led the renovation work at the Gondolin Hotel and continues to collaborate with this project, as well as with Archivo de la Memoria Trans, Bachillerato Mocha Celis, and Futuro Trans, among others.
Lecture will be held in English.
