Ve zdraví i v nemoci – a series of public events at the University Hospital Brno
From 25 August to 25 October 2026, the exhibition and programme Ve zdraví i v nemoci (In Sickness and in Health) will take place on the grounds of the University Hospital Brno in Bohunice. The programme was curated by Šárka Svobodová, a teacher at the Faculty of Fine Arts BUT, and Klára Eliášová from 4AM Fórum pro architekturu a média. Through contemporary artistic interventions and a series of expert-led guided walks through the modernist hospital complex, the programme explores the relationship between architecture, art and healthcare.Three new artistic interventions by Medard Zeman, a PhD candidate at FFA, Lucie Rosenfeldová and Andi Schmied will be temporarily installed throughout the hospital grounds and interiors. The interventions build on the now-defunct post-war practice of requiring public institutions to incorporate works of art into their architecture. The contemporary works offer site-specific commentary and interventions that reflect on the care of both the physical and mental aspects of human well-being within the highly structured and systematised environment of a hospital. They draw attention to the individual within the process of treatment as well as to the constantly evolving living organism of the hospital complex, which responds to the changing needs of medicine. At the same time, they highlight the power of sharing and the importance of supportive communities in alleviating the loneliness associated with difficult moments in the course of treatment.
The project is organized by 4AM Forum for Architecture and Media and was created with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Statutory City of Brno, the Czech State Cultural Fund, and the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology.
