Zuza Golińska, teacher at the Visiting Artists’ Studio, is exhibiting at Manifesta

Zuza Golińska, teacher at the Visiting Artists’ Studio for the 2025/2026 summer semester, is exhibiting at Manifesta. The current 16th edition of Manifesta runs through 4 October 2026, in Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, and Bochum. Zuza Golińska’s work, titled Swarm, is on display at the Gethsemane Church in Bochum.

Swarm is a series of works originating from Zuza Golińska’s explorations of the Shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland, a historically significant site where the artist has frequently worked. Sourcing materials from its scrap piles and collaborating with local welders, she crafted a constellation of objects that resemble alien organisms. Within this metallic colony, some forms bring to mind hybrid beings – part insect, part combat drones. Others have an even more menacing aspect: oxygen tanks, both life-giving and perilous, also resemble military weaponry. The Swarm Golińska brings to life can be seen both as a collective formation of fantastic life forms and as a military concept: a coordinated strike system governed by algorithmic intelligence. The remnants of the shipyard have mutated beyond repair, forming a new kind of being – one that asks what industrial sites become when their original purpose is gone.

Manifesta originated in the early 1990’s in response to the political, economic and social changes following the end of the Cold War and the subsequent steps towards European integration. Since that time, Manifesta has developed into a traveling platform focusing on the dialogue between art and society in Europe. So far, Manifesta counts 16 editions, spanning over 30 years and involving over 940 participants.
