New reviews of the book "Obrazy jiné touhy"
Two new reviews of the book Obrazy jiné touhy (Images of other desires), edited by Ladislav Jackson, have been published—in the online magazine Artalk and in the literary journal Tvar (only in Czech). The book was published by VUTIUM, and Michal Mako is one of the authors of the reviews.Ladislav Jackson (ed.) – Obrazy jiné touhy: Queer umění a vizualita v českých zemích (Images of other desires. Queer Art and Visuality in the Czech Lands)
VUTIUM, 2024
The publication Images of Other Desires: Queer Art and Visuality in the Czech Lands is based on the premise that structural inequalities and discrimination against non-heterosexual people exist in society—and existed even more intensely in the past—and that their life experience, in which they had to cope with rejection by their natural social environment, the system, politics, the state, and its institutions, is a significant, and indeed irreplaceable, source of cultural production. The chapters, divided into four sections, present interpretations of objects, texts, images, and design that can be read as queer. The temporality of such a reading comes to the fore, along with the necessity to reevaluate the canonical qualitative standards of high culture. Furthermore, the authors address the question of to what extent it is possible to link personal life (social and sexual) with artistic and literary creation; to what extent the queer life experience is an advantage and to what extent a handicap for professional success; and why, on the one hand, it is an integral part of reading and interpreting the work of non-heterosexual people, yet at the same time there is no causal relationship between the work and life circumstances.
