Interview on the ČT24 website about the forthcoming computer game about the status of Roma in Czech society

In Brno, primary schools and participating Roma pupils and adults are beginning to test a new educational computer game about the status of Roma in Czech society. The project’s main aim is to combat anti-Roma discrimination, foster mutual understanding and promote solidarity with others. The final version of the game is expected to be available in October 2026 and will also be accessible to the general public. Further information can be found in an interview with the principal investigator Martina Růžičková and game developer Filip Hauer on the ČT24 website (in Czech only).

The project Educational computer game about the status of Roma in Czech society received support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TA ČR) within the Programme for Support of Applied Research and Innovation SIGMA – Support for the Innovation Potential of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts. Out of 379 submitted projects, 64 applications were supported, with this project ranking first among the evaluated proposals. Developed by academic and scientific researchers at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brno University of Technology, the three-year project aims at the formal and content-based expansion of existing educational materials for lower-secondary education. It contrasts the currently prevalent use of sandbox games or text-based or point-and-click adventures with a comprehensive approach to the development of game mechanics, drawing on current knowledge in the field of serious games, game rhetoric and ludology. Both the content and the formal design anticipate the continuous involvement of affected actors – Roma, students, educators and relevant professional organisations – with the aim of ensuring the game’s applicability in the educational process on the one hand, and of creating a communication space for the authentic expression of Roma on the other.
