Workshop by Rian Treanor, Group Based Participation and Algorithmic Tools for Music, 17 April 2023 14:00

Workshop: Rian Treanor, Group Based Participation and Algorithmic Tools for Music and Rhythm Making, April 17, 2023 at 2:00 pm; U2/206 (audio studio), FaVU, Brno

The Department of Audiovisual Technologies invites you to a workshop by British artist, musician, and producer Rian Treanor, which will take place on Monday, April 17, at 2 pm.

During the workshop, Rian Treanor will present his methods of creating rhythms using his own algorithms in Max/MSP. He will also draw on his experience to discuss the topic of international collaboration with African artists, as well as functioning within prestigious labels (Planet Mu, Warp - Arcola). A significant part of the workshop will be devoted to an open discussion on topics that will personally interest the participants.

The workshop will last approximately 4 hours and will be conducted in English. No prerequisites are required.

Rian Treanor (Rotherham, UK) focuses primarily on electronic music and group participation. In his practice, he focuses on creating custom software for exploring algorithmic procedures and unusual synthetic sounds in various collaborations, workshops, live performances, and installations. These works are often socially engaged and invite people to play together using accessible devices that are available to everyone and anyone can start playing on them. These systems explore the relationships between procedural action, nonlinear interfaces, and musical possibilities of remote participation. They focus on research forms of network interaction between audiences and creators.

In addition to releasing recordings on various labels from Planet Mu, Nyege Nyege Tapes, The Death of Rave to sub-label Warp Arcola, he has presented his work at many leading art festivals and residences internationally: Aphex Twin Curated Warehouse Project (UK), Nyege Nyege Festival (UG), WWW (JP), Bergen Electronic Kunsthall (NO), Le Guess Who? (NL) Unsound (PL), Mira Festival (SP), GES-2 (RU), Serralves (PT), Berghain (DE), CTM (DE), Rewire (NL), No Bounds (UK), Geometry of Now (PL), Cafe Oto (UK), Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Arts (UK), Empty Gallery (HK), Irish Museum of Modern Art (IRL), Summerhall (UK), among others. He has also participated in artistic residencies at yU+co[lab] in Hong Kong, Counterflows in India, and Shape Platform 2020.

Among other things, Rian Treanor will also participate in a creative residency at FaVU, the outcome of which will be presented on April 21, 2023, at the FAUN festival.
