Course detail
Applied Painting Technology 3
FaVU-2ATM3Acad. year: 2025/2026
The course focuses on the issue of color in the context of painting practice. It introduces students to selected color theories within the Western intellectual tradition (Newton, Goethe, Runge, Itten, etc.) and explores the implications that theoretical reflections and expanding scientific knowledge about color have for painting. The course also includes an introduction to techniques and the basics of measurement methods—microscopy (observing pigment structures) and spectrometry (measuring reflective and transmissive properties of materials using a spectral photometer).
The teaching combines seminars, in which students engage with the history and selected aspects of color theories through curated readings, with practical exercises involving laboratory equipment. These practical sessions are directly related to the theoretical material covered, serving both as a counterpoint to abstract considerations of color and as a tool for verifying or challenging the discussed hypotheses. Exercises include spectrophotometric measurements of wavelengths and microscopic observations.
The course is partially based on open dialogue, culminating in a final session where students present their own perspectives on color perception, reflections on color, or, for example, principles of its use.
