(Un)Using Textiles in Fine Arts

The course will provide with an overview of the historical use of textiles in the visual arts as well as the current practice of textile art. The lectures and three practical exercises will present the textile material in relation to traditional media and as a free means of expression, while defining the concept of "textile art" in contemporary art. The course will introduce the principles of textile art, contribute to the creation of a basic orientation in the problem, which will be able to be applied in the students' own creative activities. In the introduction to the transformation of the status of textile material in art and in society, the local environment will be taken into account, while the personalities of the artists of the second half of the 20th century will be presented.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Credit is awarded for active participation in class with a minimum attendance of 70% and on the basis of the submission of the results of partial assignments from one seminar of the student's choice at the end of the semester. 
Teaching takes place in the classrooms and workshops of FaVU BUT in hours determined by the schedule. Minimum participation 70%. Make-up for missed classes is done in agreement with the teacher in the form of an alternative assignment. 

Aims

The course provides an overview of craft techniques and the use of textile material in fine arts to enrich the students' own creative work and guide them to experiment. The aim will be to develop a sensibility for the textile material and to strengthen the ability to understand its symbolism. Practical information and work in the workshops will lead to the implementation of specific textile techniques. 
Students will learn about the importance of textile art and become familiar with the issue of recognizing textiles as a legitimate means of expression. They will gain an overview of commonly used techniques and materials and will be able to identify the differences between hand and machine production.
