Foundations of Printmaking 1 – Relief Printmaking

The course is designed as a series of lectures and follow-up practical exercises focusing on the technique of relief printmaking. In this course, attention is paid in particular to the techniques of linocut, colour linocut, woodcut and wood engraving. Within each class, students will learn about the work in the printmaking workshop and workflows. The course will include the opportunity to work in the printmaking workshop during open hours. A portion of the class will be devoted to current trends and artists working with print from the top.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
The following conditions are set for the award of credit:
- Attendance in class (2 permitted unexcused absences) or submission of an assignment based on the assignment in consultation with the lecturers.
- submission of completed assignments.
Classes are taught in the graphic design workshop of the FFA BUT during the hours specified in the schedule. Minimum attendance is 85%. Make-up for missed lessons is done by agreement with the teacher in the form of individual consultations.
Aims
The aim of the Foundations of Printmaking 1 – Relief Printmaking course is to offer students a basic orientation to the possibilities of printing from height based on practical exercises. The course will enhance students' ability to think about printing from height in the context of contemporary art. Emphasis will be placed on the correct technological procedures related to traditional printmaking techniques.
Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with the procedures and possibilities of graphic techniques of printing from height. They will be aware of the place of print from height in the context of contemporary art theory and practice.
