Course detail

3D Printing and Digital Fabrication for Creative Industries 1

FaVU-1DS-ZAcad. year: 2023/2024

In this course, students acquire basic knowledge and skills in 3D printing and digital manufacturing. The lectures are aimed at explaining the basic principles and technologies of 3D printing and comparing them with other methods of digital production (CNC and robotic production, laser machining). The lectures will explain the rules for creating spatial objects, their inspection and repair, and the preparation of G-code for the successful start of printing. In the tutorials, learners will learn about 3D printer operation, maintenance and repair and gain basic knowledge about the selection of printing materials.

Entry knowledge

Basic knowledge of working with a personal computer, ability to navigate in virtual space, patience and interest in 3D technology. Experience with 3D scanning or a 3D program (e.g. Rhinoceros, Blender, Maya, SketchUp, etc.). Basic English, manual dexterity.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The following conditions are set for the award of credit:

  • Attendance at classes and active participation in workshops
  • Work on practical assignments and projects
  • Continuous submission of work outputs

Teaching takes place in the classrooms of the FFA BUT in the hours determined by the schedule. Attendance is compulsory (2 unexcused absences allowed). Higher number of absences can be compensated by submitting an alternative assignment after agreement with the teachers.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students to 3D printing technology and digital fabrication and examples of their applications in the field of art and design. Students will learn the rules of creating 3D models and designing for 3D printing or repairing them. They will also gain a basic understanding of printing materials, calibration of printing machines and the 3D printing process. On the basis of practical exercises, learners will gain the necessary knowledge and experience for further independent work in the field of spatial design using current technologies.

Gain basic knowledge of 3D printing technology and digital manufacturing. Independent work with 3D printer and its maintenance. Understanding of the 3D printing process and the ability to prepare a flawless model for 3D printing.
