Guided walk through Mariánské Valley with Šárka Svobodová, 7 November 2026
On Saturday, 7 November 2026, at 10:30 am, we invite you to join an architectural walking tour of the Mariánské Valley with Šárka Svobodová, a teacher at the FFA BUT. The walk is part of the accompanying programme for the production Mucha, Mucha, Mucha by the National Theatre Brno. The guided walk through Mariánské Valley (formerly also known as Gottwald Valley) in the Brno-Líšeň district, led by architectural historian Šárka Svobodová, will take you back to the era of mass propaganda events and popular festivities held here from the 1940s to the 1980s. The walk will begin at the site of the former U Čičáka swimming pool, established in 1930 by Mr Cyril Pernikář near his mill. On the meadow along the Říčka stream, we will recall the workers’ demonstration of 1938, which marked the beginning of an annual tradition of political peace celebrations. On these occasions, the valley’s natural amphitheatre attracted up to 200,000 visitors. We will explore the remains of the concrete grandstands, built by volunteers in 1950 according to a design by František Krejčí, a Brno-based Functionalist architect. We will also visit the places where political speeches alternated with musical performances by Czechoslovak and international variety stars, while visitors enjoyed refreshments, carousels and other traditional fairground attractions.
The walks are organised to mark the recent premiere of the comedy Mucha, Mucha, Mucha, written by S.d. Ch. for the drama company of the National Theatre Brno (NdB). This madcap “anatomy of national revival” directly addresses the peace celebrations in Mariánské Valley. Its story unfolds at Mucha’s chalet, known as Muška, a historic excursion spot with a refreshment stand originally run by Tomáš Mucha, a First World War veteran. The chalet remained in operation even after his death and continues to welcome visitors to this day. You can stop by, for example, after the guided walk.
The walk has been organised by BAM – Brno Architectural Manual, the National Theatre Brno and the Faculty of Fine Arts BUT.
