FFA BUT at Art Market Budapest, 15–18 Oct 2026
From 15 to 18 October 2026, the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brno University of Technology will take part in the international contemporary art fair Art Market Budapest with the exhibition Susedia – Sousedé – Szomszédok – Neighbors. The exhibition will present a selection of works by graduates of the Bachelor’s degree programmes in the 2025/2026 academic year. Through the theme of neighbourhood, the exhibition explores questions of shared space, relationships between communities that are close to one another yet not always intimately familiar, and the entry of young artists into the professional art scene.Art Market Budapest is an international contemporary art fair focusing on Central and Eastern Europe as well as other European and non-European regions. The fair attracts more than 30,000 visitors each year and brings together exhibitors from more than 50 countries across five continents. This year, FFA BUT will participate at the invitation of the organisers and its partner institution, the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. As part of the accompanying programme, FFA will also present its publishing activities, accompanied by a discussion with author Barbora Ilič, as well as a screening of the Bat Cave Cinema programme. The accompanying events will take place at the contemporary art centre and bookshop ISBN+.
Neighbourhood as a Point of Departure
The title of the exhibition is rooted in a simple experience: we do not choose our neighbours, yet we share walls, staircases and everyday life with them. It is an ambivalent relationship of proximity without intimacy and familiarity without genuine knowledge of one another. The title in four languages also refers to the international environment of the Brno-based faculty, where people from different countries and cultural backgrounds have long studied and worked. The exhibition brings together works created in different studios, using a range of media and without a common assignment. The curatorial selection nevertheless reveals thematic connections between them. At the centre of the exhibition is an interior that functions as a symbol of shared space. A carpet, ceramics and paintings of interiors evoke elements of a temporary home rather than an art fair booth. Home, however, is not the opposite of the market. The objects that surround us reach us as commodities, blurring the boundaries between domestic space and the market. Placed among the exhibition stands, the interior thus creates a tension between two environments in which young artists navigate: the protected space of the studio and the open, commercial world of the art market.
The exhibition therefore asks what a dignified entry into the art market might look like. It need not mean submitting to its rules, but rather developing the ability to move between different economies–community-based, academic, independent and commercial–without allowing any one of them to determine the direction of an artistic career.

Where Them Stray Dogs At & Bat Cave Cinema
On the occasion of the FFA presentation at Art Market Budapest, the independent contemporary art center and bookstore ISBN+ will host creators associated with FFA’s Video Studio. Barbora Ilič, an alumna of the studio and currently a PhD candidate at FFA, focuses her artistic practice and research on Yugonostalgia and nostalgic imagery within the algorithmic space of social media. In her presentation, she will introduce her artistic research alongside the publication Where Them Stray Dogs At: Liminal Thoughts on Balkanism, Gentrification and Nostalgia, which she edited and contributed to.
The presentation will be followed by a screening of video works by students and alumni of FFA’s Video Studio. The drive to expand beyond institutional and gallery spaces by creating "pop-up cinema" situations under the banner of Bat Cave Cinema is a defining feature of the studio.
