Erasmus+ BIP Summer School on Critical Work with Nudity begins at FFA BUT
Today, 25 August 2026, marks the beginning of the virtual component of the international Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Summer School on Critical Work with Nudity, organised by the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology. Following the virtual programme from 25 to 28 August, the BIP will continue one week later, on Wednesday 2 September, with its physical component in Brno and Prague, running until 9 September 2026.
The summer school focuses on critical approaches to nudity in contemporary visual and performance art. Rather than treating the naked body solely as a traditional object of artistic representation, the programme focuses primarily on the body as a medium of artistic creation and self-representation. It approaches the subject through contemporary performance, photography, theory and criticism, addressing feminist and queer perspectives, bodily autonomy, safety and care, ethics, documentation, social conventions and legal frameworks.
The programme is methodologically structured around three interconnected perspectives – artistic practice, documentation and critical reflection. The current team of lecturers consists of Prof. Lenka Klodová, Karolina Raimund, Alexandra Tamášová, Antonín Brinda and Kača Olivová. Their expertise brings together performance and visual art, photography, curatorial practice, art history and theory, and the critical reflection of live art.
The virtual component will introduce participants to the programme and offer lectures addressing how critics write about nudity in art, how performative work with nudity can be photographed, and how artists themselves work with nudity. The physical component will then develop these perspectives through practical workshops focusing on performative work with nudity, photographic documentation, body positivity, and ways of talking and writing about nudity in art.
From 4 September, the programme will move from Brno to Prague and connect directly with the Festival of Naked Forms (FNAF). Following a workshop on discussing and writing about nudity in art, participants will take part in the festival opening and programme, with the main festival events taking place on 5–6 September. FNAF is a long-running platform for the presentation and critical reflection of artistic work with nudity and will provide BIP participants with a direct context for experiencing performance practice, its documentation and interpretation, and subsequent discussion. After returning to Brno, the programme will conclude with a joint feedback session and completion of the participants’ outputs.
The BIP brings together both students and academic staff from FFA BUT and five European partner institutions: theAcademy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Universidade de Vigo, Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznan, and Vilnius Academy of Arts. The programme thus creates a shared international learning environment for students and academic staff from the participating institutions.
