Progressive Cultural Production: What Can Books Bring?
Talk with Freek Lomme of Set Margins’ Publications
3 November 2025 18:00
ArtMap Bookstore in TIC Gallery, Radnická 4, Brno

In this lecture, Freek Lomme, founder of Set Margins’ publications, will explore trends and countertrends, politics and lived experiences in the field of progressive publishing. Drawing on his book Care Where No-One Does: A Grassroots Style Guide to Progressive Cultural Production, Anticipating Neoliberal to National Conservative Times, he will reflect on the opportunities and challenges of publishing as a tool for cultural engagement and resistance.

Set Margins’ aspires to push at boundaries and set margins, both creatively and critically, exploring what is possible. As a support structure, a platform for production, a network and publisher, Set Margins’ exists to frame current impulses from the margin with particular focus for communication, forms of cooperation, and involved politics.

Freek Lomme has worked in the field of art, design, and cultural criticism since 2003. He founded Set Margins’ publications in 2022, after leading the independent publishing house Onomatopee from 2006 to 2022. Over the years, he has worked as a writer, curator, director, lecturer, tutor, and board member, collaborating with museums, independent art spaces, magazines, and schools across Europe and internationally.

Lecture will be held in English and is organized in cooperation with the ArtMap Bookstore.
