Advanced Printmaking – Screenprinting

The course is designed as a series of lectures and follow-up practical exercises focusing on screenprinting techniques. In this advanced course, particular attention is given to the technique of printing from direct and indirect stencils using multiple inks on paper and textiles. Within each class, students will learn about working in a screen printing workshop and workflows. The course will include the opportunity to work in the screen printing workshop during open hours. The student will understand methods of design processing and independent implementation. The student will gain the skills to apply and realise their own designs into a finished work of art with reference to contemporary artistic trends.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The following conditions are set for the award of credit:

- Attendance in class (2 permitted unexcused absences) or submission of an assignment based on the assignment in consultation with the lecturers.

- submission of completed assignments.

 

Classes are taught in the graphic design workshop of the FaVU BUT during the hours specified in the schedule. Minimum attendance is 85%. Make-up for missed lessons is done by agreement with the teacher in the form of individual consultations.

 

Aims

The aim of Advanced Printmaking – Screenprinting is to offer students an advanced orientation to the possibilities of screenprinting through practical exercises focused on more complex and technically demanding work. The course will enhance students' ability to think about screenprinting in the context of contemporary art. Emphasis will be placed on the correct technological procedures related to traditional printmaking techniques.

 

Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with the procedures and possibilities of graphic techniques of printing from height. They will be aware of the place of print from height in the context of contemporary art theory and practice.

2. Preparatory designs of direct-experimental printing templates

3. Technique of direct templates – creation of own designs, consultation

4. Direct-template technique – print realization

5. Indirect stencil technique – practical demonstration and creation of designs for printing on textiles

6. Indirect stencil technique – creation of own designs, consultation and possibilities of realization of printing on textile

13. Final lesson: Students will submit a practical assignment according to the assignment formulated in the first third of the course. Each project will be discussed with the instructor.
