O Toyen se ví, že o sobě mluvil/a v mužském rodě a nosil/a mužské šaty, přesto ale dějiny umění tento fakt ignorují a velmi často používají v textech o něm/ní ženský rod. Také aktuální výstava Toyen: Snící rebelka ve Valdštejnské jízdárně, která souborně představuje celoživotní dílo Toyen, tento aspekt jeho/jejího života nijak zvlášť neproblematizuje. Ladislav Zikmund-Lender se proto ve svém komentáři zamýšlí nad tím, jak umělec/umělkyně sebe chápal/a, jak se to promítalo do její/jeho tvorby, jakým způsobem určují heteronormativní představy často vystavení jejího/jeho díla, a připomíná i další současné motivy, které při interpretaci děl od Toyen dnešním historikům a historičkám umění unikají.

Toyen is known to have spoken of himself in a masculine gender and to wear a masculine dress, but art history ignores this fact and very often uses the feminine gender in texts about him. Also, the current exhibition Toyen: The Dreaming Rebel in the Wallenstein Riding School, which collectively presents Toyen's lifelong work, does not particularly discuss this aspect of his / her life. In his commentary, Ladislav Zikmund-Lender therefore reflects on how the artist understood himself / herself, how this was reflected in her / his work, how heteronormative ideas often determine the exhibition of his / her work, and recalls other contemporary motives. , which escape today's historians and art historians when interpreting works by Toyen.
