Original Abstract
The behavior of concrete box-girder diaphragms is dependent on many factors, such as the placing of the bearings, the inclination of the web of the box-girder cross-section, the global static scheme of the struc-ture, and many more. The diaphragm is a very good example of a discontinuity region (D-region), whose design is based on the analytical Strut-and-Tie method that is featured in current design codes and frequent-ly used by designers today. Despite the evolution of computational tools over the past decades, Strut-and-Tie models are essentially still used as hand calculations. Their application for real-world structures is tedious and time-consuming since iterations are required and several load cases need to be considered. Further-more, this method is not suitable for verifying serviceability criteria (deformations, crack widths, etc.). The interest of structural engineers in a reliable and fast tool to design D-regions led to the decision to develop the new Compatible Stress Field Method (also referred to hereinafter as the CSFM), a method for computer-aided stress field design that allows the automatic design and assessment of structural concrete members subjected to in-plane loading, i.e., beams, walls and many types of discontinuity regions. Phenome-na that require consideration, such as material nonlinearity, compression softening and reinforcement layout, are integrated into the (CSFM). This advanced method allows the computation and code checking of ultimate limit states, crack widths, stress limitations and deflection for short-term and long-term effects.
